Mindfulness and skincare

Mindfulness and skincare

I’m asked quite often why I decided to use the word ritual in the tag line of Naturannis and my answer is easy. I do believe in rituals, and cleansing should be a special time to retreat and indulge in selfcare even if just a minute.

Mindfulness is a science and art, just like massage, yoga and reflexology and I like to think of my products as such too( hope who uses them feels the love too). These arts together will help in having better balance and a better quality of life.

Chronic stress can have a serious impact on the health of your skin. By incorporating the practice of mindfulness more regularly into your day, stress levels begin to lower. In turn, you may find persistent skin issues like breakouts and dryness actually begin to clear up on their own.

Mindfulness is the art of being here in the moment, at it doesn’t need long hours and can be practised at any time and any place also as part of your personal hygiene care.

So how to we incorporate and practice mindfulness during our skincare routine? Ask yourself are you happy with your products? Do you find yourself doing it as a chore or you look forward to use your products? Is your skin in a happy place? Does it feel good, comfortable, hydrated and radiant? Are you angry at your skin, your body or yourself? If you are upset or angry have you asked yourself why? How can you change this? Do you like the smell and texture? Are you happy with the way they feel and how your skin feels after applying such products? Are you happy with the timing or would you prefer a shorter routine or a longer one? Are you aware of the ingredients in your cosmetic products? Are you happy with what’s in it? Would you change them? How you dispose of them and if you are conscious of the packaging and the impact it is having on the environment? Does it leave you feeling good? Are you happy with the results?

After asking all these questions and you answer them of course, you can adjust and start using skincare and rituals which will give you a sense of well being both physically and mentally. We tend to ignore the psychological aspect, but it is scientifically known that how we feel on the inside will reflect on the outside. And being angry at how your skin looks or angry because you don’t like ‘waisting’ time doing your creams, or you hate how they smell and feel, or because you don’t have enough time won’t help your overall look.

Understanding and embracing our skin is key for skin healing, and yes skin heals nicely once we understand what it needs. The holistic approach is key and mindfulness is a great way to this.

What to do after assessing and understanding?

Lock yourself in the bathroom or bedroom if need be! Use your senses to feel textures, smell fragrances and apply it with love and breath!!! Appreciate your skin, appreciate that you where able to purchase the products chosen, appreciate your senses that are able to feel this ritual and just be. For a moment try to love yourself and appreciate those few seconds or minutes. I promise if you do this daily you will definitely see an improvement on yourself. Much love Alexia xx
